Grid Connection

The windfarm benefits from available spare capacity in the local electricity grid to connect the windfarm. The distribution network operator, Western Power Distribution were consulted as part of the ordinal South Wales consultation by the Developer to find suitable windfarm sites and Newton Down had one of the best situations for connection, unlike many other sites that would require extensive upgrading works. Detailed connection studies have been conducted to confirm that the windfarm can be connected.

The Newton Down site also benefits from having a close-by electricity connection point. It is proposed to connect the windfarm to an existing 33kv line, only 1.6km to the north west. Many windfarms in remote areas require several miles of new electrical line.

The scale of the windfarm at only three turbines enables a connection at a relatively low voltage and hence using smaller less intrusive electrical lines. The new line would be 33kV overhead wooden pole line, similar to that around the windfarm site.

It should be noted that the grid connection is not actually included in the windfarm planning application as this is the responsibility of the local distribution network operator, WPD.
