The Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), RSPB and The Environment Agency have been consulted on the site as well as the local planning authority. The Newton Down site benefits from being away from all international and national ecological designations.
There is a small copse within the site which is a SINC (Site of Importance for Nature Conservation); this is a lower, county borough level, designation. The windfarm proposals are designed to avoid this SINC. Only a small underground cable passes on the western perimeter for 100m.
The Newton Down site benefits from being an old war time airfield. There are significant existing tracks and hardstanding around the site. Approximately 80% of track uses existing routes.
The site is primarily arable farmland which has a relatively low habitat diversity. Some of the land is managed under the Tir Gofal management scheme; there will be no significant impact on this.
Ecology studies have been conducted including breeding bird surveys, bat
roosting and migration surveys and general flora and fauna studies. No
significant ecological risks have been identified. |
